LMS Course Grades Explained
How Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle, and Google Classroom turn assignments into a course grade — and which free calculator to use on GradeCalculator.

Every LMS is a weighted average
Learning management systems combine scores from homework, quizzes, discussions, and exams. The math is almost always a weighted mean — only the labels change (assignment groups, grade center columns, categories, or Classroom topics).
Canvas: assignment groups
Canvas shows each group’s average and its weight toward the course total. Enter those groups in our Canvas grade calculator. Match only the groups your teacher counts; ignore empty or unused groups that Canvas hides from the total.
Blackboard: Grade Center weights
Blackboard Ultra and Original both support weighted columns or calculated columns. Find the weight on the syllabus or in Grade Center setup, then model each category average in the weighted grade calculator — same math as Canvas groups.
Moodle: gradebook categories
Moodle often uses category weights (Aggregation = Weighted mean of grades). Export or read each category percent from the gradebook, enter weights from the course settings, and use the weighted grade calculator if you are not mirroring Moodle’s exact drop rules.
Google Classroom
Classroom lists assignments with points but may not expose full category weights. If your teacher publishes category weights, use the weighted calculator. If everything is total points, add earned points and divide by possible points, or score each assignment in the test grade tool.
Which GradeCalculator tool should I use?
Canvas-style group weights → Canvas grade calculator. Paper syllabus or Blackboard/Moodle categories → weighted grade calculator. Planning a final exam target after you know your LMS average → final grade calculator.
Unposted, missing, and dropped scores
LMS totals often exclude missing work until a due date passes, or drop the lowest quiz. Recalculate after the gradebook updates. Our tools do not log into your school account — you type the averages your portal shows.
Teachers and privacy
All calculators run in your browser. We do not store grades you enter. Teachers can use the EZ grader on the homepage for quick quiz scoring without uploading rosters.
